Zydus Lifesciences Limited announced on October 21, 2026, that the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) had granted final approval for its Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for Estradiol and Levonorgestrel Transdermal System, 0.045 mg/0.015 mg per day. The product is a generic equivalent of Climara Pro, a hormone therapy used in postmenopausal women. The approval expands Zydus’s portfolio of generic pharmaceutical products in the US market.

The estradiol and levonorgestrel transdermal system is primarily indicated for managing moderate-to-severe menopausal symptoms. It is also used to prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis in appropriate patients. The transdermal delivery system combines estradiol, an estrogen, with levonorgestrel, a progestin. This combination provides estrogen replacement while incorporating a progestin to help protect the endometrium in women with an intact uterus who receive systemic estrogen therapy. The product offers an alternative to the branded formulation and may contribute to greater competition in the hormone replacement therapy market.

The USFDA designated the ANDA as a Competitive Generic Therapy (CGT), making the product eligible for a potential 180-day exclusivity period under applicable US regulations. This provision is intended to encourage the development and approval of generic medicines with limited competition. However, CGT designation alone does not guarantee exclusivity; eligibility depends on the applicable statutory requirements. Where applicable, the exclusivity period begins with the first commercial marketing of the qualifying product.

Zydus plans to manufacture the transdermal system at its formulation manufacturing facility in Moraiya, near Ahmedabad, Gujarat. According to IQVIA MAT data for August 2026, the product had annual US sales of approximately $45.7 million, indicating a commercially relevant market opportunity. Following this approval, Zydus reported a total of 458 USFDA approvals and 516 ANDA filings as of September 30, 2026.

This approval strengthens Zydus’s presence in the US generic pharmaceutical market and expands its hormone therapy portfolio. Potential CGT exclusivity may provide a competitive advantage, while the product’s established therapeutic applications and existing market demand offer opportunities for commercial growth.
