People with type 2 diabetes often struggle with exercise due to insulin resistance and issues with blood vessels and energy production in cells. Our study looked at how metformin, a common diabetes medication, affects exercise capacity in newly diagnosed patients.
After 12 weeks, metformin didn’t show a big change in overall exercise performance. However, it significantly improved VO2/kg, a measure of oxygen use, in patients with insulin resistance.
This finding shows that metformin can play an important role in helping people with insulin resistance improve their fitness and manage diabetes better.
